Is there such a thing as too much choice

This is one of those China stories.  Recently was checking out new fabrics at a new supplier in a place where there is around 80-90 different curtain shops.  Just seeing what what new fabrics are out there and also what fabrics I had not seen before.

Went into this shop (see picture below) expecting to see the normal 50-60 sample books.  Well they had over 200 books, each with 50-60 fabrics in each. What you can see is around a quarter of them.  So all up over 10,000 fabrics to choose from.

Have got samples of around 550 of them so far, not sure if I will get the lot.  But I know where to go for fabric now... not to mention the other 79 stores in the area.

The owner knew off the top of her head the price of all the fabrics, and no they were not expensive.

No 1 curtain mistake

Measuring – yes, seems the obvious no 1 mistake and one that “you” would never make.  However even the most careful person can make mistakes, by reading from cm’s instead of inches or vice versa, “yes darling I checked it 3 times before writing it down” however you just checked the wrong measurement three times.  Hint – get someone to check your measurements and write down width (W) first and length (L) second, drawing it out helps stop stuff ups too.

The next mistake is measuring the windows only, it is fine if you curtains are just going to cover the windows, but you need to allow for a curtain rail/rod to be installed above the window and space for curtains to hang when open so they don’t block the light.  Hints – allow around 4 inches at the top for installing rails, more if hanging off rings. On sides allow 8-12” for curtains to hang so sunlight can get in, more if wide windows/doors.

My house is perfect, hmmm… maybe not?!?  If you are in a older house or wooden house sometimes not everything is on the straight and narrow.  Measure both sides to check everything lines up.

The final mistake is using a cloth or a IKEA measuring tape.  Use a metal measuring tape.  And err on the side of extra width or length it is better to have a inch too wide curtain, than an annoying gap.

A last hint, if you already have rails/rods installed it is much easier, just measure them. If you don’t make sure you don’t get them the same size as curtains as you need to allow for decorative fixtures at the ends.

Here is a link to a great little measuring guide (not mine but I am putting one together) http://www.naturalcurtaincompany.co.uk/uploads/measuring/ncc_howtomeasure.pdf

Well these are some of the starter mistakes you can make measuring curtains, I will go into more advanced mistakes in future.

5 Window Treatments Ideas to Implement in your Home

Welcome Message

Welcome to the Viva Home Styles blog.  What will we be posting on here, well we will be posting articles/links to home decoration especially ones relating to room decoration and curtains.  We will also post new fabrics we are finding and other interesting stuff.

At the moment we are busy photographing and scanning new fabrics, check out the photo below of fabric books stacked up at one of our suppliers.  I think there was over 200 books with over 50+ fabrics in each, yes that’s over 10,000 different curtain fabric options.  Will we have them all on our website, hopefully at some stage, but to start with we are picking out the best ones to show you.  We are doing some improvements to the website to add many of these fabrics in for December.

Plus we have a special full launch promotion coming in December, stay tuned for more info.
